The Papo Megalodon was released in December, 2020 and is part of the Papo toy dinosaur series. The Papo 55087 is a hand painted figure and is made of durable synthetic material. Our thoughts on the Papo Megalodon: Papo did a really good job on this Megalodon model. Things we like include: Awesome mouth - Well sculpted and painted all the way to the back of the throat. Lots of nice double rowed teeth, and the paint job on the outside shows excellent shading on the skin. We love this model. Only drawback is that we which the Papo Megalodon was LARGER !! Megalodon Information: The word “Megalodon” literally translates to "big tooth" and the Megalodon was likely one of the largest and most dangerous predators that lived in the water. Scientists know that the Megalodon was a large creature, but exactly how large is unknown. The problem is that a complete Megalodon fossil has never been found so the size and appearance estimates are based on fragmentary remains. Most estimates of the Megalodon’s size and appearance are based on fragment remains of teeth that have been found. Extrapolating current day shark teeth data against found Megalodon teeth provides an estimate of a 35 foot length (on average) with a maximum length estimated to be up to 65 feet. It had powerful jaws with an estimated bite force of 40,000 lbf – which could easily crush any bones. At that giant size, the Megalodon clearly had a major impact on the marine community in which it lived. Near the top of the ocean “food chain” it likely targeted only the largest of prey – whales, seals, etc. Like the old joke - What’s a Megalodon eat” – whatever it wants. However, it likely did face competition from other large predators such as the Livyatan. The Megalodon lived approximately 25 million years ago. There are many thoughts as to why the Megalodon became extinct. A recently announced (September 2019), Late Cretaceous Japanese hadrosaur Kamuysaurus discovered near the town of Mukawa, Hokkaido in Japan. Living around 72 - 70 million years ago the herbivorous animal grew to around 8 m in length. Kamuysaurus may have had a short crest on its head. Papo Young Smilodon measures 3.5" L x 2" H. New in 2022. This is the only young Smilodon figure currently available. Bright yellow eyes really pop. A lovely model with great muscular, skeletal detail, and bright glowing eyes. We really like the paint job on this figure, but unfortunately does not match the paint shades on the other Papo Smilodons. Now you can build that Smilodon family! Smilodon Facts: The name Smilodon is derived from “two edged knife” and “tooth”. The Smilodon “big” teeth were around 11 inches long. The Smilodon lived approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago and ranged throughout North and South America. Depending on the species, the Smilodon ranged from 120 – 950 lbs. The Smilodon primarily hunted large mammals (like buffalo). Their large teeth were fragile however and could not bite into bone without the risk of breaking. The Smilodon is also known as the “saber tooth tiger” and is one of the most recognizable and well-known prehistoric animals. Ironically, the “Sabertooth” isn’t really related to the tiger, but rather is related to the cat family (Felinae). Thus to call the Smilodon a “Sabertooth Tiger” is to miss-name the Smilodon.
